Pauli Murray (1910–1985) was a Black queer feminist, lawyer, poet, and civil rights activist whose legal brilliance shaped both the Civil Rights and Women’s Rights Movements. A trailblazer in every sense, Murray’s work laid the foundation for Brown v. Board of Education and inspired Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s fight for gender equality.
As a nonbinary/gender-nonconforming person in a time when language around identity was limited, Pauli lived at the intersection of race, gender, and queerness—challenging oppression on all fronts. They were the first Black person assigned female at birth to become an Episcopal priest and spent their life fighting for justice in the courts, churches, and streets.
Though often left out of mainstream history, Pauli Murray’s legacy reminds us that Black queer voices have always been essential to liberation. Their fight continues today in movement...
