10 YEARS AGO in Heritage Boatworks! Can you imagine lifting a 19’ 6” long wooden boat? It took about fifteen volunteers to accomplish the task (in 2015) as they flipped our Florida Skipjack onto her keel. Volunteers in the Heritage Boatworks Program at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum orchestrated the successful maneuver — which involved rolling the boat onto a bed of tires before repositioning her on the stand. The handmade history is currently on view on the Light Station grounds. The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum has been supporting traditional boatbuilding in St. Augustine since 2007 when it first established the Heritage Boatworks, a living boatbuilding exhibit the purpose of which is to recover and pass on the art of traditional boat carpentry to future generations and share it with the general public.
