An Iowa couple didn't think twice before leaving the warmth of their house to save a deer from nearly drowning in an icy pond in frigid temperatures earlier this month.
Angel and Shawn Blanchard were eating dinner on Feb. 15 with their grandchild when Angel Blanchard noticed some deer walking out on a pond in their southern Iowa town of Moravia. Two made it off safely, but just as Shawn Blanchard was saying they needed to get off or they would fall through the ice, one went down.
This was just before some of Iowa's coldest weather of the winter season arrived. Wind chills that evening were expected to be around 10 degrees.
