This trio provides abundant nutrients for the tiny aquatic organisms that paint the ocean in shades of green and blue. Phytoplankton bloom during the spring and summer in the South Atlantic Ocean, thriving on the long days of sunshine. The various colors represent a mix in communities as they change throughout the months-long bloom based on nutrient availability and environmental factors. The exact types of phytoplankton present during a bloom can be a challenge to identify with remote sensing imagery.
