It’s no one’s fault that I got an eating disorder.
EDs are multifaceted mental health conditions with psychological, cultural, biological, and social factors. The point of this post is not to place blame on one person for my ED. It’s to bring attention to the fact that words matter. A simple statement that is completely inconsequential to one person may have a lasting effect on another.
The messages that we choose to spread are the messages we choose to empower. So before you speak, think about whether you want that statement to be something that your daughter or son internalizes. Think about whether that statement should be given the power to dictate futures.
To reiterate, I do not blame anyone for my ED. I do, however, hold myself accountable to do whatever I can to keep the same thing from happening to others. For Eating Disorder Awareness week, I want to make people aware of the power of words and the danger of giving power to the wrong ones.
