Typically found in the Sonoran and Mojave deserts, this species only appears in central and southwest Oregon during the warmer months. Wijeratne believes this is the first documented sighting of a Costa’s hummingbird in the state this year. Weighing just 0.07 to 0.11 ounces, the tiny bird is known for its iridescent plumage, which shifts color depending on the angle of light. Males use their dazzling feathers to compete for mates, a trait honed over generations. Costa’s hummingbirds can visit nearly 2,000 flowers a day, sustaining their rapid metabolism with constant feeding. Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backward and hover in place, but on rare occasions, they rest.
