A Zemí is a Taíno concept that designates both a deity or ancestral spirit and certain sculptural objects that house these spirits. According to Spanish missionaries, there were several Zemís. Two of them being the Creator God, the masculine spirit of fertility, Yúchahu Maórocito, governing the growth of cassava (yuca), and Atabey, Yúcahu’s mother and goddess of fertility, who governed water, rivers, and seas. Zemís are made from diverse materials, including bone, clay, wood, shell, sandstone, and stone.
