DAY 1 COMPLETE: @SXSWEDU kicked off today, with @AustinISD journalists from Eastside and McCallum completing two interviews with prominent speakers at this year’s event. The interviews were made possible through AustinISD’s partnership with PBS NewsHour @StudentReportingLabs. The students from Eastside and McCallum complemented each other today. Eastside students showed the McCallum students how they recorded interviews, and McCallum students shared how they conducted live interviews. In addition to the two interviews, Shield journalists attended various sessions from speakers who traveled across the country to share their stories. In the morning, Katherine Garcia Gonzales of Eastside interviewed librarian and TikTok influencer Mychal Threets. Threets talked about a wide range of subjects including his favorite books, the essential role of literacy and how book banning helps to discourage young people from reading.
