Iowans could see six new public charter schools open across the state in the next two years.
The Iowa Board of Education has approved applications from five groups to open schools in Des Moines, Davenport and Crescent during its February meeting.
Iowa has seen an uptick in public charter schools since lawmakers expanded who can open a school following the passage of House File 813 during the 2021 legislative session. The law was part of Gov. Kim Reynolds' sweeping 2021 education agenda.
Currently, there are seven public charter schools operating in Iowa and another 10 have been approved to open over the next two school years.
