Imagine taking a swim and suddenly coming face-to-face with one of the creepiest deep-sea creatures ever—the anglerfish. That’s exactly what happened off the coast of Tenerife when researchers spotted a humpback anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii) floating near the surface in broad daylight. Normally, these guys lurk in the pitch-black depths, thousands of meters below, so seeing one this close to the top is practically unheard of.
Scientists aren’t entirely sure what brought it up—maybe it was escaping a predator, maybe it was sick, or maybe it just got a little too adventurous. Unfortunately, the fish didn’t survive long after being found, but its body is now being studied at the Museum of Nature and Archaeology in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. A rare opportunity to learn more about this mysterious deep-sea dweller!
