Vic Chesnutt (1964–2009) was an influential singer-songwriter based in Athens, Georgia, known for his expressive vocal style and poignant lyrics. A car accident at age 18 left him partially paralyzed and using a wheelchair, but he continued to pursue music. After moving to Athens around 1985, Chesnutt performed solo at venues like the 40 Watt Club, where he caught the attention of R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe who produced Chesnutt's first two albums, Little (1990) and West of Rome (1991). Chesnutt's work garnered critical acclaim, leading to collaborations with notable artists and a tribute album, Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation (1996), featuring covers of his songs by musicians such as R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls. Despite his physical challenges, Chesnutt released numerous albums throughout his career, leaving a lasting impact on the folk-rock genre and the Athens community.
