Portland transportation officials are set to roll out a new program this summer to regularly clean and maintain hundreds of miles of city bike lanes. Launching June 30, the $10 million initiative is bankrolled through the city’s clean energy fund, which is providing more than $140 million for climate-friendly projects within the Portland Bureau of Transportation, according to officials. It comes two years after the Transportation Bureau suspended all residential street sweeping amid chronic budget challenges. The bureau faces a $40 million shortfall next fiscal year, which has prompted it to eye steep reductions to pothole repairs, safety improvements and basic road maintenance.
