Some Johnston pet owners, including a City Council member, have mourned missing or dead dogs and want the city to take action to combat what they say are the culprits — coyotes. The attacks are spurring the city to explore allowing residents to trap coyotes. Lisa and Kevin Murray heard on an audio recording from a camera at their Johnston home a coyote attacking their dog Livy on Jan. 21. The Murrays have not seen Livy, a 3-year-old, 9-pound Morkie with white fur, since then. But they did find her pink dog coat, dirtied, near the trees at the edge of their backyard in the 9400 block of Wickham Drive. "We had the same experience you did," Johnston City Council member Tom Cope told Kevin Murray at a council meeting in February. Murray attended the meeting to ask the city to allow for trapping and provide its residents with more information on how to live with coyotes.
