On April 14, 2001, the inaugural Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) match kicked off at RFK Stadium, marking a historic moment for women’s soccer. The Washington Freedom, led by Mia Hamm, defeated the Bay Area CyberRays 1-0 in front of approximately 34,148 fans.
As the first fully professional women’s league, WUSA paved the way for the future of the sport. Today, the NWSL continues that legacy, growing the game and inspiring the next generation. ⚽💫
