All the pushing and shoving was a minor inconvenience.
Malik Gasper played on, calmly taking over in the second half and leading New Rochelle to a 64-51 over Corning-Painted Post on Wednesday, March 12, in a NYSPHSAA Class AAA sub-regional at Yorktown High School.
The Hawks simply had no answer.
“Malik is a big frame,” Huguenots coach Rasaun Young said of his 6-foot-8 senior. “He struggled at the end of the season against league opponents who know him so well. They all doubled and tripled Malik so he may have been a little tired, but this is what he can do.”
Gasper (pictured, diving into Corning's Teigan Gill (21)) had 15 points in the fourth quarter.
“Even if we’re up eight or nine, we’ve got to keep the lead going,” he said. “We know at any moment (a lapse) could end our season right away. … That’s why I kept on scoring at the end because I felt they could’ve easily come back.”
