After 27 years on death row, Brittany Holberg's capital murder conviction has been overturned following a shocking revelation about a key witness. Holberg, now 52, was sentenced to death in 1998 for the brutal 1996 killing of 80-year-old A.B. Towery in Amarillo, Texas. Investigators say Holberg, then 23 and working as a sex worker, met Towery outside a grocery store before going to his apartment, where she fatally attacked him with a hammer, stabbed him 58 times, and forced a lamp pole down his throat. Last week, the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 to send her case back to trial court, citing prosecutors' failure to disclose that their key witness, Vicky Kirkpatrick, was a paid police informant.
