I first learned about the Maffetone Method from Nick Bare a few years ago and have used this approach ever since.
I will admit, in the beginning I was skeptical about running at such a slow pace but after a couple months when I saw my speed increase while running at the same HR I had been, I was sold.
If you are new to running or HR focused running you may need to subtract 5-10 beats from your MAF number and start there. This may be difficult to maintain when starting out but stay diligent.
It’s also a good idea to allow your body to adapt to the MAF HR for a couple months before incorporating speed/tempo work.
Choose a proper starting weekly mileage for your fitness level then add 5-10% distance every week, this gradual increase will help to stave off injury (along with proper warm up and recovery).
