This legislation would later be known as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In his historic speech, he proclaimed, “There is no Negro problem. There is no Southern problem. There is no Northern problem. There is only an American problem.” Johnson also referenced the civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome,” underscoring the collective struggle against injustice: “Because it is not just Negroes, but all of us, who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and injustice.
