On this date, March 9, 1970, shortly before a show in Columbus, Georgia, the self-styled godfather of soul, James Brown, replaces most of his band (including veterans Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker), which had complained about working conditions and pay, with a young group from Cincinnati, The Pacemakers led by the brothers Bootsy and Catfish Collins. Bootsy Collins stated: "He treated me like a son. I mean, Good Lord. Every night after we played a show, he called us back to give us a lecture about how horrible we sounded.
