Less is more: One of the hardest skills for a goaltender to master is understanding how much to move. This holds particularly true in cases of deflections. It is very easy to overcommit to a side as opposed to targeting where the puck is going to be deflected. We set up a fun compete drill for nj87s mitch.stenger this morning. The primary shooter is to place the puck out to the right or left, but also to mix up the range of how far he puts it out right or left. The goal is for the goaltender to get a read of the shot release and understand how much he needs to shift over. Ideally, if you shift properly, the puck hits you center mass off of the deflection (if the coach chooses to deflect) and keeps the rebound in front of you or within a playable distance to get in position for the rebound.
