“While we’re still getting snow here in Chicago, so here are a few tips to get the best shots.
1. I love shooting at night - the streetlights really bring out the snow.
2. You’ll need a faster shutter speed - I try to keep it over 1/100 depending on conditions, otherwise the snowflakes will be blurry and washed out. At night this will mean adding a good amount of ISO for proper exposure.
3. I shoot with a Sony Alpha 1 and Alpha 7R IV, which handle low light well - I’ve gotten really nice shots even over 12,000 ISO. But you can get away with some noise because of the snow if you don’t have a camera that handles low light well.
4. My lens of choice is the Sony 70-200 f2.8 G Master II for shooting street scenes - it isolates people really well (over 135mm at f2.8 especially, which also lets in more light than an f4+ aperture).
