Listen to violinist Charlie Siem deliver a mesmerizing performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D Minor (BWV 1004) on the historic Joachim-Ma Stradivarius. Over 300 years old, this magnificent instrument was crafted in 1714 by the legendary Antonio Stradivari during his celebrated “Golden Period.” Siem chose this piece to honor Joseph Joachim, who, mentored by Mendelssohn, revived Bach’s violin works. Joachim's passionate advocacy for Bach, particularly the Chaconne, shaped its place in the violin canon. The Stradivarius, with its rich legacy, beautifully connects to this remarkable moment in violin history. Estimated at $12M–$18M, Sotheby’s is honored to offer this masterpiece of sound as the highlight of Sotheby’s New York’s Masters Week. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the New England Conservatory, establishing the largest named scholarship fund in NEC history.
