Oregon lawmakers are considering whether to empower children conceived from donor sperm, eggs or embryos to gain access to the names of the donors who made their existence possible, similar to the rights adopted children have to learn the identities of their birth parents. Senate Bill 163 would require clinics that collect sperm, egg or embryo donations to ask for the names, birth dates, addresses, phone numbers, emails and medical histories of donors, which would then be entered into a state donor registry where the information would remain even if the clinics went out of business. When the children born from those donations turn 18, they would be entitled to access their donors’ information.
