For 21 years, there hasn’t been a day that cornelllacrosse doesn’t think about the number 21.
It was the number worn by Mario St. George Boiardi, who on March 17, 2004, passed away on the field after blocking a shot.
For Cornell, George epitomized what it meant to be a great teammate and a great person, and his legacy permeates the Big Red program. His locker remains unused and serves as a memorial to him. His number 21 will never be worn again. George is also honored through the tradition of the ‘Hard Hat,’ a representation of the work ethic George embodied and given to a junior on the Cornell team each season.
We profiled the Hard Hat tradition in ‘The Season 2019’, when Cornell legend Jeff Teat was its keeper.
