“5 Years After the 3 Billion Birds Lost Research, America Is Still Losing Birds.”
These are the grim words with which the 2025 State of the Birds report opens. The report is a stark reminder that US bird populations are in freefall, with many being dangerously low:
➡️ 42 species, including the Allen’s Hummingbird, Tricolored Blackbird, and Saltmarsh Sparrow, are on the brink.
➡️ 37 species are showing long-term population losses and accelerated declines.
➡️ 33 species have long-term population losses but are relatively stable.
Prepared collaboratively by the americanbirdconservancy, audubonsociety, cornellbirds and other avian conservation organizations, the report underscores the power of targeted conservation efforts, including:
🌲 Habitat restoration, such as protecting coastal wetlands and grasslands
🌲 Expanding efforts to mitigate threats like invasive species
These efforts are working but the numbers tell us there’s no time to waste.
