When Acting Senior Sergeant Yuki Onuma applied to become a police member in 2011 (after a little encouragement from her colleagues), she had no idea that she would become the first Japan-born police officer in Victoria.
Today, Yuki is a well-respected sergeant working within the Organisation Policy Unit. She also assists with cases involving Japanese nationals as requested by other departments, as well the consulate office, embassy, and law enforcement agencies of Japan.
For Yuki, speaking a language other than English is “just like having an additional ‘tool’ in the kit bag.” Being able to offer the Japanese community additional support and understanding of shared culture is the best part of her job.
And while the additional ‘tool’ does come in handy, she acknowledges the significance of considering cultural appropriateness, and differences in judicial systems and laws that may affect a victim’s expectations from police.
