UC Davis alum and current UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy graduate student Ryan Manriquez, who also serves as president of the UC Graduate and Professional Students Council , was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a rare neuromuscular disease that leads to progressive muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing and breathing, and a significantly shortened life expectancy. That is, until a drug that began as #nih-funded research and clinical trials, was approved by the FDA in 2016, changing the course of his life dramatically.
