Congratulations to alumna Ashley Shade ’04, who was recently awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the U.S. government's highest honor for scientists and engineers early in their careers. Her groundbreaking research exploring the diversity and functions of rare microorganisms in Centralia, Pennsylvania, earned her the award.
"It's wild how a little spark of an interest, when nurtured well, can ignite a career," Ashley said. Her research on Centralia began as an undergraduate when she wrote the grant proposal for Tammy Tobin, now emeritus professor of biology at Susquehanna University.
