Anyone heading to the Bagdad Theater or the nearby Powell’s Books this summer will find something new on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard — a pedestrian plaza, taking up part of a street near an intersection, with picnic tables, street murals and a solar-powered kiosk. But it’s not yet known whether the addition, at Hawthorne and 37th Avenue, will be permanent. The plaza, which will cut off traffic for cars at the north part of the intersection, is set to operate as a six-month pilot program.
