It was the first major sporting event in Asheville since Hurricane Helene. Against Ronaldinho’s USL team no less. It’s a game that had Cupset written all over it. From the roped off field in the middle of the woods to the lone apartment building towering above us just meters away from the pitch, Greenwood Field felt like a true fortress. On paper ashevillecitysc were the underdogs going up against gvltriumph (a whole division above them), but straight from the opening whistle, Asheville held their ground. All thanks to a beautiful synergy between players and fans that we’re still struggling to describe. For both, it felt like a cathartic moment to heal. The old adage that soccer is the most important of the least important things in life seemed to ring true amidst those trees. From fans and players alike, we heard how this match was a moment to pause after a difficult last few months and simply enjoy a soccer game for 120 minutes.
