An amazing week surrounding Punctuate! Theatre’s production of “The First Métis Man of Odesa” by Matthew MacKenzie and Mariya Khomutova, directed by Lianna Makuch, and presented by Soulpepper Theatre.
A re-telling of their relationship’s resilience through international restrictions and the horrors of the ongoing full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, this story of Matthew and Mariya echoes a hope and commitment to returning to a free home.
The weekend hosted a beautiful Heritage Night featuring kalendarfolk voices, many artists and vendors of Ukrainian heritage, and a conversation on Mother’s Day hosted by Andrew Kushnir with Mariya and her mother, Olga, the literal pillar of the play.
