Helios House in Los Angeles, California certainly has a space-age design — but there’s more to this futuristic fuel stop than its good looks.
This eco-conscious gas station was the first in the world to be certified by LEED (a global green building accreditation), and incorporates tons of innovative energy- and resource-saving tricks. The recycled stainless steel tiles that give the structure its signature look, for instance, include 90 solar panels (enough to generate energy for 2-3 homes) and even help collect rainwater for irrigation use during droughts.
And while the distinctive design may be more reminiscent of a space station than a gas station, there’s actually something very terrestrial about it. The roof is planted with grass to provide natural insulation to the structure, and the restrooms on-site are furnished with renewable bamboo.
