The 2024 Restaurant and Chef Awards are right around the corner! For the next few days, the beardfoundation is highlighting the six winners that will be accepting the America’s Classics award presented by heinz on stage this June. This award is given to locally owned restaurants that have timeless appeal and are beloved regionally for quality food that reflects the character of its community. Up first is Vietnam Restaurant (eatatvietnam). Founders Nhu Lai and Thuyen Luu fled Vietnam with their eight children and settled in Philadelphia, establishing a grocery store in 1979 that quickly transitioned into a restaurant in Chinatown in 1984. By 2000, they passed the business on to their son, Benny, and moved to a larger multi-floor space next door, securing Vietnam’s place as one of Philly’s favorite date-night destinations for classic Vietnamese cuisine.
