Absolute VO₂ (L/min) vs. Relative VO₂ (mL/kg/min) 🧬 Quick summary ahead of this week’s lab tests with gymking: Relative VO₂ expresses the amount of oxygen consumed per unit of body weight, usually per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). This is good for determining how efficiently a person’s body is using oxygen relative to their weight and also allows comparisons across individuals of different sizes and body compositions.
But as I BULK up for this year’s world record swim (and will be suspended in water so gravity less of an issue for me) I will be looking at my absolute VO₂ which refers to the total volume of oxygen consumed by an individual per minute, expressed in liters per minute (L/min). This measures the total oxygen consumption without taking body weight into consideration and is useful for understanding the overall oxygen demand of the body during exercise or physical activity 🧬
