Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels—St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael! The word “angel” comes from the Latin “angelus,” meaning “messenger of God.” Archangels are chief messengers, delivering God’s most important messages to humanity. There are seven archangels in total, but only these three are named in Scripture. St. Michael defends us against evil, St. Gabriel brings messages of hope, and St. Raphael is a healer and guide. These powerful archangels intercede for us, protect us, and help in spiritual battles. Here is the St. Michael prayer: St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
