In the ongoing “Nopales Híbridos” series, Salvador uses the resilient cactus as a metaphor for these communities that thrive despite facing systemic oppression. In the context of the overt attacks toward Latine immigrants including the use of tear gas at the border, the separation of detained families and the caging of children, and the fortification of the border wall, Jiménez-Flores’ world is ever more poignant.
