A rare deep-sea visitor has surfaced! This Pacific footballfish (a species of anglerfish) was spotted on a Carlsbad beach by Jordan Coronel (jc_85) on Feb. 12. đđ
You might remember a footballfish making headlines in 2021âso how does this one compare? This specimen is a bit smaller (10.5 inches vs. 13 inches) and missing most of its tail.
Graduate students from the Arcila-Betancur Lab at Scripps Oceanography scripps_ocean âEmily McFarland, Emily Ignatoff, and Jessica Zhongâcollected samples from the fish, while Ben Frable, manager of the Marine Vertebrate Collection at Scripps, preserved it for further study.
âEach specimen is valuable, and with this one, we collected high-quality samples that will contribute to research on the genomic architecture and adaptations of anglerfishes, enhancing our understanding of their evolution,â Frable said.
