Duck Summer Jobs: Charles Petrik 🦆💼 Charles interned in Columbia at the Alcaldía de Medellín, the mayor’s office and town hall, through UO’s GEO Study Abroad program. In this role, he worked in the Department of Physical Infrastructure and had the opportunity to learn new GIS programs, including QGis, Dashboard, and ArcMap. “I analyzed their pothole and public space data to create representations for use by the city to understand high-priority areas for infrastructure in Medellín. My work was entirely in Spanish,” Charles said. During his summer experience, Charles accumulated over 200 hours of GIS practice and significantly increased his Spanish fluency. “Immersion is so critical to learning a language and I came to understand that during my eight weeks in Medellin,” he shared. Charles’ advice to other students is “if you can get out in the world (anywhere), you will return with a more informed perspective. The resources are there, it just takes a little planning!” #CallMeADuck
