Rallying our way to the Goodwood Members’ Meeting—are you ready to take the road less traveled in this rare 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0 ‘Rallyewagen’ Coupé? ⁠ ⁠ As one of just seven works cars, this machine played a pivotal role in Mercedes-Benz’s rallying history, with legendary driver Hannu Mikkola at the wheel. Designed to meet homologation requirements for the 1978 World Rally Championship, the 450 SLC 5.0 featured an all-aluminium 5.0-litre V8, lightweight alloy panels, and a specially developed automatic transmission. This very car, chassis ‘626’, debuted at the 1979 Safari Rally as a practice vehicle before appearing at the Côte d’Ivoire Rally, where Mercedes secured an iconic 1-2-3-4 finish.
