Handwriting requires the integration of perceptual-motor processes and cognitive processes. Some characteristics of students having difficulty with handwriting may include poor letter formation; letters that are too large, too small, or inconsistent in size; incorrect use of capital and lower-case letters; letters that are crowded and cramped; incorrect or inconsistent slant of cursive letters; lack of fluency in writing; and incomplete words or missing words.
