Records fell, championships were won and a former Karns City football player returned home. The sports calendar produced plenty of emotional, celebratory moments in Butler County this year. Runners arguably stole the show this year, with Butler’s Drew Griffith shattering records, crossing unbelievable thresholds and dominating the track and field season; Slippery Rock winning its first state championship and another Freeport runner owning the cross country championship in the fall. The last 365 days also saw the emotional return home of Karns City quarterback Mason Martin nearly a year after he collapsed on the football field. Martin continues to rehab with family around him. And then there were the individual and team championships, both at the district and state levels. So many to count, so many trophies brought home.
