The City of Des Moines has begun removing a longstanding, deteriorating art installation in Greenwood Park. The wooden artwork, installed in 1996 and created by New York-based artist Mary Miss, was commissioned as part of the Des Moines Art Center's permanent collection. The environmental structure is made up of a series of walkways, shelters and viewing sites for visitors to use to observe nature, but has fallen into disrepair over time due to Iowa's harsh weather. The center blocked off parts of the structure that were deemed unsafe. In January, the art center settled a nearly year-long legal battle with the artist for just under $1 million. Miss had accused the organization of breaching her contract when it moved to remove the installation last year. The removal process will include temporarily draining the pond where some of the structure was built, but the city says most of the park will remain open to the public. Read more at ipr.org #iowa #ipr #npr #news #fyp #iowapub...
