#WomensHistoryMonth: Beverly “Bev” Johnson is a history maker, both behind the microphone and across the airwaves. For more than four decades, the Memphis native has served as a trusted voice in radio, education and community service. As host of “The Bev Johnson Show” on the legendary WDIA Radio, she became the first Black woman in Memphis radio history to host a talk show and has remained a vital presence on air for nearly half a century.
A proud alumna of Jackson State University, Johnson earned her master’s degree in educational and media technology in 1979. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Rust College and has earned certifications in substance abuse counseling and drug court counseling, reflecting her deep commitment to both communication and care.
