STORYTIME + TIPS for Driving Safely in Mexico
Last week, I told a new friend I was planning a road trip to Valladolid (a must-visit city—2hrs from Playa del Carmen, 1.5 from Tulum, and 1 from Cancún). She couldn’t believe I felt comfortable driving my own car and road tripping here.
Nowhere in the world is 100% safe but living in fear based on social media horror stories will keep you from experiencing the best life has to offer. When I decided to drive 4 days from South Carolina to Playa del Carmen, people told me I wouldn’t make it. The truth is, driving in Mexico can be safe and enjoyable if you do your research and take the right precautions.
My Tips for a Safe & Fun Road Trip in Mexico
✅ Do your research – Know the difference between toll roads (cuotas) and free roads (libres). Toll roads are safer, better maintained, and have roadside assistance.
