The best classroom any young goaltender or, for that matter, aspiring goaltenders that are coming up through the ranks can have is free. Just watching a random game last night between Philadelphia and Montreal, there were so many great learning opportunities from situations that happened in last night‘s game. I like to take a look at the difficult or good goals against and learn how the goaltender could have put himself in a better position. A common theme many of the goaltenders I coach will hear me talk about is time and space. With the skill of today’s players, if you are too conservative, it gives them the time and space to make a move to get you to commit and plenty of space to shoot it.
