Pickens County has been struggling with limited emergency medical services since the hospital's closure in 2020. But the Pickens EMS dedication ceremony Thursday marks a turning point. The county received an ambulance truck from the Alabama Fire College and a monthly $15,000 pledge from Pickens County Hospital Authority to support future operations. Future plans include staffing two 24/7 paramedic-level ambulances. Now, it is up to residents to vote on a proposed tag-fee referendum in the 2026 primary ballot.
