We're used to vending machines plunking out a soda, a bag of chips or a favorite candy bar. But what about dispensing a new book?
That's the novel approach about a half-dozen desmoinespublicschools are taking to get kids to read — using vending machines to distribute books.
Goodrell Middle School led the initiative, putting in a book vending machine in 2021. Since then, Harding Middle School and several area elementary schools whose students attend Goodrell for junior high have added the machines.
Students — who get to keep the books they select — use tokens they receive from staff to "pay" for them.
