Last night, I spoke to the PRSSA LSU Chapter as part of their PR in Sports series. It was a full-circle moment to stand in front of students passionate about sports and storytelling, just like I was 15 years ago when I started my journey in college athletics.
Over the course of my career as a PR director in college athletics, I’ve lived the highs and lows, the buzzer beaters and the late-night deadlines. Along the way, I’ve learned a lot—but I’ve boiled it down to five key lessons that I shared with the group last night:
1️⃣ Every day is a job interview. Whether you’re in the press box, on a Zoom call, or just walking the halls—how you show up always matters.
2️⃣ Learn to be comfortable in the unknown. Sports move fast. Plans change. Flexibility isn’t a nice-to-have—it isn’t a must.
3️⃣ Be courteous, not judgmental. Asking good questions and seeking to understand will take you far. (Thanks, Ted Lasso!)
