A pair of Assembly Bills working their way through Sacramento are taking a closer look at how the state—and counties—compensate inmates for their work. Assembly Bill 247 would increase the pay for inmate hand crews. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, they’re paid between $5.80 and $10.24 a day. Those assigned to an active emergency earn an additional dollar an hour. The bill would increase this to $19 an hour while they’re assigned to an active fire.
