I was recently on a night dive in Raja Ampat when I got separated from my dive buddy. With no one around, I carried on. I had my head buried in a reef, photographing a tiny shrimp, when I got this feeling I was being watched. I turned around, and hovering over my shoulder was this little guy: a bigfin reef squid.
Curious and unafraid, he lingered as I turned my lights toward him. Did that ever get him excited! Bigfin reef squid have specialized cells in their skin that can reflect and scatter light. When he caught his reflection in my dome port, it was a full light show. I ended up spending half an hour captivated by his performance.
Whenever I encounter another living being, I like to think of them as fellow passengers on this giant spaceship we call Earth. It’s sad to me that most people will only encounter creatures like him on a plate, swimming in mayonnaise.
